On Friday 12th June, 45 Year 9 Latinists set off on the school’s annual trip to Hadrian’s Wall. This was a unique opportunity for students to experience the wonders of Roman Britain first hand. There were too many highlights to outline them all here, but David N did his best to capture them all in his trip report below:
We began our trip at 5:45 AM, loading onto the coaches from around 6. From there, it was a quick 6 hour drive up to Housesteads Roman fort, one of the many forts alongside the wall, where we were given a tour by Kevin from Ancient Britain Tours. We then walked along the wall, down to Sycamore Gap. After this, we headed back to the hotel. We then had dinner, before going bowling. It was up bright and early the next morning, and we headed to the Roman Army Museum, where we were met by our other guide, Peter. After perusing the museum, we had our picnic lunch and then walked along another section of the wall by Cawfields quarry and explored a mile fort (so called because they were placed every mile). Finally, to finish up the trip, we explored the amazing site at Vindolanda, a large camp that contains the best preserved organic Roman artifacts in Northern Europe. After another extraordinarily long journey, we arrived at the school, to the relief of staff and students alike.
