Sports Round-Up – Summer Term 1

The start of the summer term has seen cricket and tennis seasons get underway, with a full block of fixtures against Hampton School providing an exciting opening weekend. There were also additional fixtures across the week, including cup cricket and some excellent individual achievements.

The 1st XI travelled to Hampton and faced a strong side in a competitive contest. Hampton posted an imposing 351 from 50 overs, with Tiffin left to reflect on missed chances in the field. In reply, Tiffin showed resilience, finishing on 220, highlighted by a 100-run opening stand and well-made half-centuries from Ranveer, Zayan and Ayush.

The 2nd XI pushed Hampton close at Grist’s Sports Ground, narrowly losing by 19 runs. Hampton made 183–9, with Raghav taking an impressive 4–46. In response, Tiffin were bowled out for 164, with Shiveyn scoring 50 and Abir producing a superb unbeaten 47* in a late push that just fell short.

The 3rd XI were also involved in a closely fought encounter away at Hampton. After being put in to bat, a solid start from Rudy and Nishkarsh (50 opening stand), along with contributions from Sid, Jasmine and Gurutej, saw the side post 160. Hampton chased the total with an over to spare in a tight finish, despite excellent bowling from Matthias and Pranav.

Earlier in the week, the U17s began their campaign in the National Cup away at Harrow School. Although the result did not go their way, it was a valuable experience with plenty of positives to take forward.

The U15As secured a memorable win away at Hampton, building on last year’s success against the same opposition. Batting first, they posted 173–5, with Nandan leading the way with an excellent 68. A disciplined bowling and fielding effort restricted Hampton to 169–6, with Nandan holding his nerve to defend 14 runs in the final over.

The U15Bs were involved in a thrilling match that could already be a contender for game of the season. Hampton were restricted to 170, with Felix taking an outstanding 3–17. Tiffin matched the total thanks to Andrei (42) and Thomas S (32), leading to a Super Over. Andrei struck two sixes to set 18, before Felix calmly defended the total to secure a dramatic victory.

The U14A and B teams enjoyed strong wins away at Halliford School earlier in the week.

  • The As won by 71 runs, with Nirmay scoring a superb 83, supported by Atharv (48)*.
  • The Bs bowled Halliford out for 93, with Simon (3–12) leading the attack, before chasing the target comfortably thanks to Rehan W (40)* and Nathan C (25)*.

Over the weekend, the U14As faced Hampton, with Nirmay adding another impressive half-century, although the side finished on the losing end.

It was a landmark week for Year 7, who played their first ever cricket matches for the school. The E and F teams secured victories against King’s College School Wimbledon, with standout performances from Jemal, Aidan, Dominic, Micheal and Arthur E.

The A, B and C teams faced tough opposition at Hampton but showed plenty of promise. Nyay and Chase (36)* were particularly impressive.

The U15 rugby players had a special training session at The Lensbury with Steve Borthwick, head coach of England Men’s rugby union team. It was an insightful and valuable experience that will no doubt benefit the boys moving forward.

The tennis season also got underway to a successful start , with the U18s travelling to King’s College School Wimbledon for their opening fixture and winning both boys and girls fixtures.

The U14s competed away at Alleyn’s School, narrowly losing in a deciding tie-break after a closely fought match.

Year 7 made an excellent start to their tennis journey, recording a 3–1 victory over Kingston Grammar School. Oscar S, Spencer, Luke and Aryan P all impressed in a strong first outing.

Athletics also began their season last week at Claremont Fan Court School. In a highly competitive meet with over 20 participants, Tiffin finished 3rd in the U15 category and 4th in the U14s, a strong start to the season.

Congratulations to Tobias M, Benedict and Cameron M (Year 7), who were finalists at the In2Hockey London Plate Finals representing Surbiton Hockey Club. Held at Lee Valley VeloPark, their team secured a well-deserved bronze medal after a full day of competition.

It has been an excellent and busy start to the summer term, with strong performances, exciting matches and promising signs across all age groups.
