We were delighted to welcome Dr David Hoare from Newcastle University earlier this week for a day of lectures, seminars and hands-on workshops with Chemistry students across the school.
In the morning, Dr Hoare delivered a series of engaging sessions for our Year 12 and Year 13 students. Drawing on his experience as an AQA A Level examiner, he offered valuable guidance and exam tips, which our Sixth Form chemists were eager to put into practice. His lecture on NMR spectroscopy provided a clear and insightful overview, helping students strengthen their understanding of this topic.
Students then took part in two practical workshops using a UV spectroscope, where they analysed and identified a range of crystalline samples which linked directly to the AS Chemistry course.
In the afternoon, Dr Hoare visited 9GAN who thoroughly enjoyed taking on his engineering challenge, “Offshore Wind: Keep Yourself Out of Hot Water.” Working in teams of six, students planned the placement of a wind farm to avoid hazards and maximise output. Competition was fierce, with varying levels of success!
Many thanks to Dr Hoare for a brilliant day of Chemistry enrichment.
