Last Friday, Mr Shaw and Dr Wilson took 30 year 9 students to Surbiton High School for a ‘Science in Schools’ lecture. This was being run over several days and Tiffin was awarded the Friday slot. The session was attended by Surbiton High, Hollyfields and Tolworth Girls school. Some of the attending Tiffin students wrote about the experience below.

‘Unforgettable was the only way to describe our Chemistry trip. It started with an explosive fire experiment that immediately had the whole room captivated like a fish on a hook. Like a bursting ball of energy, the presenter was full of jokes, which quickly showed the room that he had a genuine passion for his work. After the fiery opening, he switched to energy and nutrition, breaking down how our bodies extract energy from what we eat. Using snacks as props, he walked us through digestion: how our taste buds detect different flavours before enzymes in saliva start breaking down food. From the stomach’s acidic breakdown to the small intestine absorbing nutrients for energy, he transformed a rather mundane topic into a fascinating and engaging topic (even despite the rather squeamish segments, where we had an unfiltered look inside his body!).’

‘Our school trip to Surbiton High School was an amazing experience from start to finish. We learned all about the digestive system in a fun and engaging way. One of the most exciting parts was watching butane being set on fire—it was incredible to see the bright flames and learn about the science behind it. We even saw some foods explode during an experiment, which was shocking and exciting! Everything was well-planned, and it was fun to go to. Overall, it was a fantastic trip that left us with great memories and a deeper appreciation for science.’
