Today, 30 students who have chosen Drama for next year had the exciting opportunity to take part in the Children’s International Film Festival in Kingston.

This was a fantastic creative and industry-focused experience, giving students the chance to explore film, performance, storytelling and the wider creative industries through a series of practical workshops across Kingston. This year’s festival was linked to the Bayeux Tapestry, with all three workshops creatively exploring this historic theme through film-making, sound and visual storytelling.

The timing of this theme felt especially exciting, as the Bayeux Tapestry is due to go on display at the British Museum from September, returning to the UK for the first time since it was made almost 1,000 years ago.

Students visited Kingston College, where they took part in a hands-on documentary-making workshop, exploring how interviews  and historical material can be shaped for the screen. At Kingston Museum, they stepped into the world of practical film-making by recreating a moment from the Bayeux Tapestry and experimenting with the creative possibilities of green screen technology. They also attended a fascinating workshop at John Lewis with leading Foley artists, discovering how sound effects are created and how sound can completely transform an audience’s experience of a story.

We are incredibly grateful to have been offered this wonderful opportunity and our students thoroughly enjoyed being part of such an inspiring celebration of creativity, storytelling, history and film.
