Mandarin Club students left school on Thursday at 3:40pm, wasting no time to walk to the cinema. They were eager with anticipation to see a Chinese-made blockbuster, Ne Zha 2, in a special screening in Chinese with English subtitles. Ne Zha 2 is a global hit: it’s an animated fantasy adventure adapted from Chinese myths, five years in the making, and the first Chinese film to surpass $2 billion at the box office.

Here are some thoughts from students who watched it:

I have always thought Chinese mythology was uninteresting, but this movie flipped that impression upside down. Ne Zha 2 is a Chinese-made film, each scene crafted with meticulous detail. Cast at the Odeon IMAX in Kingston, the Surround Sound System envelopes us in dynamic audio perfectly synchronized with the stunning visuals on the giant screen, conveying the phenomenal sound to us without missing a beat. Massive and curved, the paranormal projection facade stretches from floor to ceiling and edge to edge, making it feel like we were dancing alongside the dragons. This trip was great fun and we enjoyed every bit. (Warren L, Year 7)

I thought the movie was very impressive. Although I didn’t understand most of the words, it made me feel emotions with the voice acting. The visuals were stunning, they made an abundance of creatures grouped together, surprisingly high quality, and the vast scenery looked spectacular. Overall, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. (Ben P, Year 7)

I really enjoyed watching Ne Zha 2. It was a really cool movie and I recommend it a lot. It indeed had very good animations and I even challenged myself to try and spot characters we have learnt on the subtitles. (Miti Shimov, Year 8)

I really enjoyed the Mandarin trip to the cinema. The movie was really exciting and fun to watch and going with my friends made it special as well. (Pavel A, Year 8)

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip and despite my previous doubts about it, I found it very enjoyable and would probably place it in my top 10 best films watched. (Lev K, Year 9)
