As the new academic year springs upon us, so does the rugby season here at Tiffin. With the rugby season getting under way on Saturday 7th September, four teams started their season. An overall review of the weekend proved very successful with some great performances from our 1st XV, u14As and u13As, who managed to get their first wins of the season, demonstrating the hard work and immense effort they have put in over preseason.
Starting with the 1st XV team, who put in a great shift managing to hold out to win despite a last minute surge from the Wallington boys, winning 17-12. The 1st XV boys showed great cohesion and great teamwork in their defensive efforts to maintain the lead along with some powerful set piece moves led by captain Chubuikem. A man of the match performance from Auzair showed his maturity as a senior 1st XV player. This was a great set up for the rest of the season and we hope the boys can maintain the good form going into their next fixture.
The u14As took to the field for the first time this season with a great win against Wallington, showing real grit and determination to fight out a solid win despite conceding three quick tries after half time. The boys showed their true colours and stuck together with some great defensive performances from our second row Adam and both wingers Kai and Vincent. This was matched with some outstanding attack for Tiffin with both Vincent and Kai managing to bring out their inner Cheslin Kolbe and use their footwork to make a few line breaks and get themselves on the score board.
Our u13As took the trip to Wallington boys and put on a dominating performance and really showed with skills that they have been working on in pre-season. With some key performances from Dan Carter (not that one) getting 5 tries on the score board and Finlay putting in a great performance.
Lastly our u15As made the trip down to Wallington boys and fell to an unfortunate loss but displayed some great skill and teamwork which shows that this won’t be a common occurrence this year. Showing their ability to play and expansive style of rugby and really spread the ball around the pitch.
We look forward to seeing the rest of the rugby team progress and also the rest of the sports on offer at Tiffin. Netball kick off their season next week against Surbiton in a tough opener and we are excited to see Miss Passco’s girls kick on after such a successful last season.
