It wouldn’t be summer without Strawberries and cream, and so on Monday 17th June the English Department duly obliged by taking the cream of our Sixth Form off to Strawberry Hill House for a tour and a lecture.  We are fortunate indeed to have Horace Walpole’s 18th Century Gothic masterpiece so conveniently close to our Tiffin environs.  The tour was fascinatingly informative and certainly gave our students an insight into the mind of the man who invented the Gothic genre in English Literature.  The lecture was similarly enlightening and, Miss Passco and I are relieved to report, aligned with what we had been teaching our students so far.  Students reacted favourably to their visit with one remarking that their interest in the Gothic had been rekindled to the extent that they were off to find a copy of The Castle of Otranto.  I would lend them mine, but I’m off to reread it now!
