History
Portsmouth Trip
The study of history is the beginning of wisdom
J. Bodin, 16th Century French economist

At Tiffin we aim to develop boys knowledge and understanding and to nurture an enduring interest in where we have come from, who we are and what we can achieve. We place great emphasis on teaching the skills of the historian, especially critical analysis of sources, cogent argument, and judging the value of historical interpretations. We believe that these skills are invaluable to equip our students for life in the 21st century.

Key Stage Four
In years 10-11 History becomes one of the GCSE options and boys take the AQA Modern World Course, which is a vibrant and stimulating programme of study. This encompasses International relations 1918-1963, Germany 1919-39, Britain during the 2nd World War, and Russia 1914-41, with Coursework on The Changing Role and Status of Women and “The Western Front in World War I which is accompanied by a residential visit to Ypres and the Battlefields of the First World War. The department aims to promote vigorous debate about differing interpretations of why things happened in the way they did in whatever period under investigation.

Key Stage Five
History is a popular choice in the sixth form, with over 40 boys opting for the course for AS. Students follow the OCR Exam Board AS/A2 Level History which is broadly 19th Century history. Topics include: The Age of Pitt and Liverpool 1783-1830, Napoleon and Europe and The Origins of the American Civil War 1848-1861. A2 students follow courses on Bismarck and the Unification of Germany and War and Society in Britain from 1793 to 1918 , as well as completing an in-depth piece of Coursework on a topic of their own choosing (from any period between AD 750 to the 20th Century!) Trips in the Sixth Form usually include a visit to the National Archives and also a visit to Portsmouth. Each year several students go on to study the subject or related disciplines at university level.
