English
The Tiffin English department aims to inspire students to read widely, express their thoughts eloquently and to understand texts, and thereby themselves and the world, more deeply. We have an energetic team of teachers, who have a range of impressive qualities and qualifications. Humour, creativity, directorial skills, sensitivity and subject knowledge are all used to foster an exciting atmosphere of creative learning.
We are constantly seeking to challenge all students in a secure environment, where risk-taking is encouraged. Our teaching takes account of different learning styles and all staff use a range of pedagogical methodologies.
Key Stage Three
We teach one unit of work every half term at this key stage. The units are written to allow progression from year 7 to 9 and they focus on: poetry; personal writing; play scripts; prose fiction; argument and persuasion; the media. Students are taught in mixed ability form groups.
Key Stage Four
All our year 11 students take both English and English Literature GCSE (see www. AQA.org.uk for full course details).
Key Stage Five
In the sixth form, we offer OCR English Literature at AS and A Level (see www.ocr.org.uk). We expect students to study independently and to read around their set texts to allow them to develop their critical skills.
