Classics
Trip to Italy
The Classics Department at Tiffin School is lively and forward thinking and is as strong today as ever. Our chief aim is the development of key skills and the capacity for clear thinking in precision of analysis, comprehension, evaluation, interpretation and expression. Latin is no longer musty old books, dull paradigms and silly sentences. Pupils develop their knowledge of the civilisation, culture, history and literature of the Greeks and Romans through interactive, multimedia resources (see www.cambridgescp.com).

Key Stage Three Latin
The value of learning a language that enhances a pupil s knowledge of English and forms the essential building-blocks for many modern languages cannot be over-emphasised. Through the study of Latin at Key Stage 3 pupils gain a fascinating insight into the way of life of a people who helped to shape the modern world. We learn about everything from myths and poetry to slavery, the army and Roman technology. The aim of Lower School Latin, therefore, is to allow pupils to experience the Classical World, its culture and language and to provide a firm foundation for future study.

Key Stage Four Latin
In Year 10 pupils continue to follow the Cambridge Latin Course. Initially this consists of specially written narratives set in Rome in the First Century AD. From these, pupils progress to adaptations of Roman authors, and ultimately to the authors themselves. Pupils also study different Roman Life topics. The chosen exam board is OCR, syllabus 1942.

Key Stage Four Greek
Tiffin students are also given the opportunity to learn Ancient Greek. Greek GCSE is a challenging and stimulating course with much to excite the imagination and intellect of students already interested in the Ancient World. Pupils study language and literature as well as Civilisation topics. We follow the OCR 1941 syllabus which is identical in form to the Latin GCSE syllabus.

Key Stage Five
“Both experience and observation convince me that Classics forms an excellent basis for all sorts of careers. (Jeremy Morse, former Chairman of Lloyds Bank) In the Sixth Form, Latin and Greek are offered to A and AS levels following the OCR specifications 3818 and 7818 for Latin and OCR 3817 and 7817 for Greek. Latin and Greek are demanding A Level subjects, but ones which are endlessly rewarding. Pupils continue to develop their language skills and read both prose and verse authors. They can and are studied in combination with just about every subject offered in the Sixth Form at Tiffin. They complement both Arts and Sciences.

Other information
We hope, as well as producing excellent GCSE and A Level results, to stimulate in all our students a life-long interest in the subject and curiosity about the ancient past and the world we live in. This keen interest in Classics at Tiffin reflects the desire for boys to obtain a qualification that encompasses academic rigour and precision and one that separates them from the masses of like-minded examinees. As a Department we seek to create a caring, stimulating and secure environment for all Tiffin pupils, regardless of ability, where they study and gain an appreciation of the Ancient World and in which they develop personally, socially and academically.
